"Bushes & Succulents" 2018

Mona Kuhn was born in São Paulo, Brazil, in 1969 and is of German descent. She received her BA from The Ohio State University, before furthering her studies at the San Francisco Art Institute in 1996. She currently lives in Los Angeles and is an independent scholar at The Getty Research Institute.

Kuhn is well known for her large-scale nude photographs with a very soft and inimitable light, creating a unique dreamlike atmosphere. About this new series “Bushes & Succulents” Mona Kuhn says the following:

Aside from being suggestive, the botanical close-ups of “Succulents” are marvellous to gaze upon. It is reminiscent of Georgia O’Keefe’s floral paintings. Your eyes wander around the graceful lines, not knowing exactly what you are looking at. The selective focus, used while creating the image, leaves room for the imagination. When I look at the large print, I no longer know if I am floating underwater looking at corals or female parts. You enter a realm of visual pleasure and wonder.

The images entitled “Bushes” are a celebration of the female essence, the au naturel crotch, confident, raw, elegant yet confrontational and unapologetic. In an effort to abstract it away from reality, I experimented with solarizing the black-and-white prints. The effect is reminiscent of Man Ray’s elegant renderings. In this work, the reaction on the skin ranges from metallic, to brilliance, to aged stone. The process reveals imperfections, it brings to the surface their struggles, their strengths, their power.

“Bushes and Succulents” is my artistic response to the ongoing currents in contemporary feminism.

Her work has been exhibited and included in many collections and museums around the world such as the J.Paul Getty Museum, The Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Pérez Art Museum in Miami, The Museum of Photographic Art in San Diego, the Miami Museum of Art and The International Center of Photography in NYC. In Europe, her work has been exhibited at the Royal Academy of Art in London, Le Louvre in Paris, Deichtorhallen in Hamburg, Musée de l’Élysée in Lausanne and the Leopold Museum in Vienna.

Kuhn’s first monograph, Photographs, was debuted by Steidl in 2004, followed by Evidence (2007), Native (2010), Bordeaux Series (2011), Private (2014), and She Disappeared into Complete Silence (forthcoming 2018).
