Ruimtekoers Festival Arnhem | 'First year': Thomas Kuijpers

The third edition of the Ruimtekoers Festival took place in Arnhem. With art exhibitions, theater, music and dance performances, workshops and lectures, created by professionals as well as city dwellers, new perspectives on living together in the city are shared. In a time of "collective grumpiness and a disappearing human dimension", the festival shows a possible new course for the city and society. By creating an inspiring, exemplary mini-society, the residents are inspired to contribute to a new course themselves. The festival takes place at various locations in the so-called "sleeping quarters" of Arnhem-South. Participating artists are: Rob Voerman, Sachi Miyachi and Thomas Kuijpers.

'First year' is an exhibition by visual artist Thomas Kuijpers. Thomas asked himself, What if Donald Trump was an artist? The exhibition depicts Donald Trump's studio during his first year of art academy. For example, the above "self portrait" called: First self portrait exercises, already very good.

Thomas Kuijpers likes to play with the concept of "truth" and its presentation. Media and current events play an important role in his work; he analyzes the depiction of violent events in the media and their effect on existing (pre) judgments about population groups, religions and politics. In this way he shows how the media feeds and fuels our (pre) judgments and how parallel realities arise.
