Palazzo Reale | 'Hi-Lo Transformers': Inez & Vinoodh

Overview

From 31 October to 13 November, Palazzo Reale presents Inez & Vinoodh's exhibition, the first to be held in a public institution in Italy, for which the two artists have chosen to immerse themselves in high-tech and then subvert it.

The Photo Vogue Festival, now in its fourth edition, has become a symbol of culture and excellence in the field of photography, dedicated to the common ground between Ethics and Aesthetics. A unique opportunity for all photography, art and fashion enthusiasts to come into contact with professionals and key figures in the field: the great masters of photography, the most important curators and the most prestigious agencies.

Among the various events of the Festival is Inez & Vinoodh's exhibition at the Royal Palace, which includes a series of iconic images by the two artists transformed into large hand-painted posters that will be displayed inside the beautiful and richly decorated rooms in the Prince's private flats. The result is a strong and almost discordant dialogue between the photographic style of the artists, the lavishly decorated surroundings and the direct and raw artistry of the hand-painted billboards. A chorus of three voices joined by that of the viewer.

Since the beginning of their collaboration, Inez & Vinoodh have chosen to use the increasingly sophisticated technical and digital photographic tools, not to produce a sense of awe or flaunt empty formal skill, but to create content. The changing nature of their subjects reflects the changing feelings and emotions in contemporary society. For them, the involvement of the viewer is not limited to the gaze, but expands to the emotional layers of the image. The art of I&V keeps pace with the changing cultural and visual environment. In some ways they are science fiction artists, in the best sense of the term.

The hand-painted works on display are created by Jason Coatney of Colossal Media, a global leader in hand-painted outdoor advertising. Founded in 2004, Colossal has become a trusted creative partner for renowned brands, agencies and artists worldwide. Inez & Vinoodh were inspired by the large-scale billboards created by Colossal, which can be seen on the streets of New York City, and were excited to bring this art that was created to be enjoyed outdoors into the museum space.
