Fotokino | 'The Oldest Thing': Ruth van Beek
THE OLDEST THING AT FOTOKINO, MARSEILLE
Ruth van Beek (born 1977) lives and works in the Netherlands. She has exhibited internationally, notably at Post Books (Tokyo), The Ravestijn Gallery (Amsterdam) and Fraenkel Gallery (San Francisco). Since 2014, she has taught at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. Her work has been published in magazines such as The New Yorker, Vogue and The New York Times.
Ruth van Beek's works come from an expanding archive of images, cut up and separated to create new meanings. This process of selection and organisation is central to her work. The archive mixes a variety of photos, transformed into uniform material by photography, resulting in distortion and confusion. She creates collages by combining and manipulating image elements, revealing hidden universes and transforming images into animated objects.
