Eva Stenram’s 'Décor' showcases work from her Ravestijn Gallery exhibition 'Offcut'. The exhibition continues to investigate the ways in which we look at and experience found erotic photography, and explores strategies for interacting with and challenging this particular photographic history and culture.
'Décor' follows on from a number of artworks in which Stenram has been accumulating 1960’s pin-up imagery and changing the photographs in ways that accentuate and amplify the interior details that surround the female models’ bodies - particularly the fabric seen in close proximity to the female models’ skin.
This fabric is drawn out from the picture and rendered physically, alongside the image. Thus photography becomes three-dimensional, bursting out of the plane of the picture to occupy the actual space of the gallery - a kind of surplus or excess of the image, or a leakage.
Eva Stenram (1976) was born in Stockholm and lives and works in Berlin. In 2012 she was nominated for Le Prix Découverte des Rencontres d’Arles (Discovery Award) and in 2007 she won the Royal College of Art Graduate Award. In 2013, Stenram was a finalist in the Hyeres International Photography Competition and she won The Cord Prize - First Prize (UK).
Stenram’s work has been exhibited worldwide, including the Mumbai City Museum in India, Zendai Museum of Modern Art in Shanghai and The Photographers’ Gallery, Whitechapel Gallery and Victoria Albert Museum (V&A) in London, Le Bal in Paris and Artipelag in Stockholm. The Moderna Museet Stockholm, V&A and the Tate Gallery London have included Stenram’s work in their collection.
