Modern Art Museum Shenszen: 'Propjects': Scheltens & Abbenes
In PROPJECTS, each image is treated as a prop in itself, contributing to an immersive, site-specific installation that combines photographs, video works, and objects.
On January 21st, 2025, the Shenzhen Art Museum in China will open the exhibition PROPJECTS, presenting a comprehensive overview of the work of Dutch artists Maurice Scheltens and Liesbeth Abbenes. The exhibition title, coined by the artists, merges the words "props," "objects," and "projects," encapsulating their distinctive artistic approach.
Scheltens & Abbenes take everyday objects as starting points to craft meticulously composed photographic images, where playfulness meets precision, and stark realism blurs into optical illusions with abstract qualities. For them, objects are not the end goal but serve as props in a larger visual narrative—a means to construct new artistic realities within the confines of the photographic frame.
In PROPJECTS, each image is treated as a prop in itself, contributing to an immersive, site-specific installation that combines photographs, video works, and objects. The exhibition transforms the space into a layered reality, blurring the boundaries between image and object.
Curated by Marcel Feil and Liu Gang, this marks the first full-scale presentation of Scheltens & Abbenes' work in China, offering an in-depth exploration of their unique visual language.
